Fidelitas is the Theology Network's mentoring programme, designed to support theologians making the transition from undergraduate study into academia and ministry.
On Fidelitas you'll be part of a group of like-minded theology students and graduates seeking to grow in faithfulness to Christ and effectiveness in service in their theological practice. Drawing on the wisdom of mentors who have been living out their faith in academic theology and ministry contexts, we'll explore how our theology can point ourselves and others to Christ and be both fuel for and the content of our Chrsitian service. Whether you're applying for a PhD, entering some form of Christian ministry, or are just serious about ongoing theological development as you serve in your church, Fidelitas will equip you to delve into Scripture and theology in a way that bears gospel fruit.
Who is Fidelitas for?
Fidelitas is aimed at those making the transition from undergraduate study to academia or ministry. We welcome applications from those going into their final year of undergraduate theology, master's students, and those going into their first year of work in ministry or research.
What does the programme involve?
Fidelitas runs over one academic year, from September to June. Learning takes place in a small group setting, with an online or in-person gathering roughly once a month. This includes Theology Network's Autumn Gathering, a January retreat day, and Enrich in the summer.
Learning will centre around theology that is faithful to the gospel, and how that kind of theology can impact our reading of Scripture, our effectiveness in service to the Church, and our witness to the world. We will be reading A Model for Evangelical Theology by Graham McFarlane and Biblical Reasoning by R. B. Jamieson and Tyler Wittman.
You'll have the opportunity to develop your own thinking and practice through written responses, time each term one-to-one with a mentor, and a final project in which to connect your learnings with current work that you are doing.
Who will I be mentored by?
Our mentors are all Christians currently active in research and/or ministry with a background in theology who have years of experience wrestling with the challenges of faith and theology.
What does it cost?
The cost of Fidelitas 24-25 is £100, which covers attendance at in-person conferences. Payment will be taken when places are allocated in September.
You'll also need to either purchase or otherwise acquire the two core books.
- Graham McFarlane, A Model for Evangelical Theology: Integrating Scripture, Tradition, Reason, Experience and Community, Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2020.
- R. B. Jamieson and Tyler R. Witmann, Biblical Reasoning: Christological and Trinitarian Rules for Exegesis, Grand Rapids: Baker Academic, 2022.
